Disinfection is the inactivation of microorganisms in water. It belongs at the end of the treatment line: disinfection carried out before suspended solids and organic load have been removed is both inefficient and consumes more chemical or energy than necessary.
The choice of method depends on whether a residual is required. UV and ozone leave no residual in the water; where a long distribution network has to stay protected, chemical dosing comes into play.
Ultraviolet light destroys the ability of microorganisms to reproduce. It uses no chemicals and alters neither the taste nor the chemistry of the water; in return it provides no lasting protection in the network and its effectiveness depends on the clarity of the water.
Disinfection and oxidation with ozone, a powerful oxidant. Also effective on colour, odour and organic matter; ozone is generated on site and never stored.
Controlled chemical feed with a dosing pump, solution tank and measuring equipment. Preferred where a residual disinfectant is needed in the distribution network.
However powerful the UV lamp, there is no disinfection if the light cannot pass through the water. Turbidity and suspended solids screen the light; the microorganism hides behind the particle.
That is why we always position UV after the filtration stages and establish the cleaning interval for the lamp sleeve during commissioning. A fouled sleeve means a system that looks like it is working and is not.
If no residual disinfectant is required, UV is sufficient and uses no chemicals. If there is a risk of recontamination in a long distribution network, a method that leaves a residual is needed.
Lamp life is given by the manufacturer in operating hours; once that is reached the light intensity has fallen and the lamp must be replaced even if it is still lit.
No, ozone is generated on site and used immediately. That removes any storage and transport risk.
